Water Market

The Utilities Regulatory Authority (URA) regulates utilities that supply water services in Vanuatu.

Union Electrique du Vanuatu Limited (UNELCO) has been operating a Water Service Concession in Efate since 1994.

The Government (Public Works Department) runs the water supply and distribution in Luganville on Espiritu Santo Island, Isangel on Tanna and Lakatoro on Malekula. It also provides water supply to provincial government centers in Vanuatu.

Small water utilities provide services in communities throughout the country.

EFATE

UNELCO's concession covers about 7,041 customers on 39km2, from the urban area of Port Vila to peri-urban areas (Black Sands, Manples, Second Lagoon, Erakor and Pango villages).

It produces an average of 11,728 m3/day. There are four storage tanks (Perchoir, Facio, Quai, and Tribunal) and a booster pumping station is located on the site of the Quai tank to supply the up Elluk and Le Plateau areas.

The raw water comes from the Tagabé River and is treated with a type of bleach. The quality of the water is in line with the World Health Organization's standards.
